The purpose and mission of the GTYC is the promotion, protection, and encouragement of boating for pleasure and sport, and to encourage the development and cultivation of good fellowship among its members.

The Grand Traverse Yacht Club was formed in 1960 to draw together those who share both an enthusiasm for boating and the Grand Traverse Bay. Over time, the club has grown into a year-around community based in the shared enjoyment of the water and good company. Primarily a sailing club, racing remains an important focus of club activities with PHRF and one-design competition on Wednesday and Thursday nights and weekend regattas. Our cruising fleet is composed of sail and power boats that explore the Great Lakes and beyond each summer. Youth sailing is promoted through a partnership with Traverse Area Community Sailing and local High School sailing teams. The GTYC clubhouse is open to members all year for social activities and rentals -- check the calendar for details.

 Organizational Structure

The GTYC is a private club managed by a board of directors who operate under By-Laws and policies approved by the membership. The GTYC is structured along the traditional format for private yacht clubs. The Commodore is assisted by a Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore and the Immediate Past Commodore. In addition, there are 6 Directors. A non-voting Secretary and Treasurer complete the board structure. There are also six standing committees, a club manager and several supplemental committees. It takes a lot of people to keep the gears moving smoothly. Volunteering your time to the club is a fundamental responsibility of membership.
