Melges Regatta
The Club hosted a couple of great events these last couple of weeks. The Melges regatta went great! We had some really challenging conditions on Saturday and were able to get several races in. Sunday the wind was really shifty, with 40 degree shifts being common. These conditions challenged even the most experienced competitors. I promised the skippers and their crews that the new facility was going to be first rate and would defiantly add to next year's event. Thanks to Mike Dow and Bob Clark for putting on such a great event. Also thanks to Dave Skibowski for handling the financial end of things.
Nan-C-Jay
Wednesday night the annual “Commodores Choice” race called the Nan-C-Jay regatta took place. Once again the conditions were challenging. The course took the competitors a couple of miles North of Red 8; I think everyone learned why we stay in the bottom of the bay. The spin fleets sailed into a huge hole with no wind while the rest of the Jam fleets sailed in great breeze just to the South. Most of the competitors finished within 50 minutes of each other. It was a great night. Unfortunately we ended the evening on a sad note. After the bar closed up on Wednesday the proceeds from the event were stolen out of our manager's car. I had the unfortunate task of having to go back down to the Club to file a Police report with the Leelanau County Sherriff's Department. I spoke to several of the members who were in attendance around the time of the theft, none of which noticed anything out of the ordinary. The Sherriff's Department is following up with some interviews and an investigation.
Reconstruction
We received all of the bidder packages from five of the six firms who were asked to bid on the construction of our new facility. The reconstruction committee then met and opened each bid package. The bids were studied in detail making sure each bid was accurate and addressed all of the issues that Doug outlined in our request. At that point the committee then decided on the two most competitive and responsive firms and set up interviews. The interviews took place on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. At this point we are very comfortable with both firms. The two firms understand the project and put a huge amount of time and effort in to their estimates. The committee will be making a recommendation to the Board of Directors later next week as to which firm we should hire to build our new facility. The BOD will be presented with the details and will vote to hire one of these firms for the project.
Have a great holiday weekend.
